Day 1: Fairfield, CA - 82 miles

Day 1: 03 June 2007
Burlingame (San Francisco, CA) to Fairfield, VA.  82 Miles.

Day’s Theme:
Kick-off the Trip, Get Inland……..

Weather:
Nice day overall.  Cool and cloudy in San Francisco, and warm and breezy in Sonoma Valley.

How I feel:
Good overall.  Bike ran pretty well.  Had a lousy “continental breakfast” today and no lunch, so, fingernails had to do!
Butt is A-OK right now………………

Notable Events:
The first section of the ride was “worrisome”.  Well, we knew this would a difficult logistical day – we wanted to ride 17 miles together as a group and take pictures in The Golden Gate Park  I haven’t had a flat in two years – got one at mile 10 today JUST after I stopped to help another little bike boy out.  Andy, stopped the truck when he saw how mechanically inclined I was and fixed me up.  Thought of you Kevie………………..,.
We all did our wheel dip in the Pacific Ocean, then headed over the Golden Gate Bridge into Sonoma Valley then to Fairfield.

Pictures:
What’s Happening:

Ready to go.  Don’t let this picture fool you – San Francisco was cold…………….

Unlike me, Robert does not give into to trends and peer pressure, and decided to wear his jacket.

Bikers are a strange group.  I never really considered myself one, and they actually haven’t really accepted me, but, we were gathered and ready.

What is this – an Optos’ Former Employee Ride?

No Teena is NOT riding cross-country, she just happens to be across the country.

Here’s Teena talkin’ French with Robert.

Here’s my “official” start – even though I already had one flat!

Nice picture Teena…………

Some people NEVER take their helmets off – you’ll see why later.

Almost to the Golden Gate Bridge – some nice panorama in a city park in San Francisco.

Ditto.

Arlene and Robert on the bridge.  Arlene in from Louisiana I think.  She is amazing!

The bridge has sidewalks and they are BUSY on the weekends – this picture does not show that, but, I was busy biking.  Sorry!!

Half way!!

Across the bridge that is………………

Here’s Robert climbing a long hill in Sonoma Valley.

OK, so, this is why people leave the helmets on.

Day 1 – all is good………………………….
