Day 9 – Pack Riding Near Carlin Canyon
Day’s Theme:
Heavy climbing, 20 miles of strong headwinds, Colorado ruggedness!
Weather/Terrain:
Back into elevation, it was cool in the AM, but warmed up quickly. Heading into the mountain passes, there were EXTREMELY strong headwinds for 20 miles! The scenery was green and wet – beautiful!
How I feel:
I am still quite good. I do have a pressure point in the left butt cheek, but, talking to other riders, most do. One very strong rider even sagged today – his ass was killing him!!
Notable Events:
Blue Mesa Lake – beautiful alpine lake.
Dava – get a boat slip here!!

What’s Happening:

Leaving Montrose, we had a view of what was in store for the next two days – climbing!
What we didn’t really care for, was the extremely strong headwinds we fought for 20 miles – including several miles uphill!

Our first climb brought us to this beautiful alpine meadow….

And also to our first screaming downhill for the day.
These downhills are fun if the road is good – these were good!! J

At the bottom of that downhill we rode along the powerful Gunnison River in the town of Cimarron.

A few miles up the road, I hob-nobbed with the locals, and others ate fresh, hot, home-made pies!

The ups and downs bring you in and out of some steep, rocky areas like this.
Well, we are in The Rockies……

Watson Ranch had a nice view of Blue Mesa Lake.

This is the Gunnison River – the same one that carved the Black Canyon.

This lkae, Blue Mesa Lake, was spectacular. We rode along this for like 10 miles I gather – I could have taken 4578 photos!
Remember, there is a destination though….

Here is another view of the lake.
At this point we were 10-15 miles from Gunnison, so, the Rocket, Howie, and I picked up the pace. Well, we did stop for Reeses and Diet Coke, then resumed….
Gunnison was a nice little town with a brew pub. A couple Hopalicious IPAs, this journal, and I’m out!

Great Photos! I was in the same area in September of 2007. I went out to visit my uncle in Montrose for 10 days. We took a lot of road trips and got to see a lot of areas. It is so beautiful out west.
