Day 9 – Pack Riding Near Carlin Canyon

Day’s Theme:
Climb High, Soar Down!!

Weather/Terrain:
Well, this is a big day in the CCC – riders hit their highest elevation and cross the Continental Divide.  The weather cooperated – cool in the AM, and overcast and cool on the climb.  The day was simple– 42 miles (from 7700 to 11,312 feet!)  up, 24 down!!

How I feel:
I am well, and all the other riders are well also.  Not a single rider sagged today – EVERY rider climbed this mountain!!

Congratulations to all riders – a job well done!!

Notable Events:
Again, it is notable that EVERY rider today completed this whole ride – per the AB Staff, this is not the “norm”.

Another notable event, Christine, a new staff member who will work from Pueblo to NH, and her fiancé Bill exchanged vows at 1:00 PM on Monarch Pass!!  I just thought they were out of breath!  Best wishes to them!!  J

What’s Happening:

After slight climbing from Gunnison to the base of the Monarch Pass @ 33 miles, we started an 8 mile climb.
At times, like this, there was little room between the white line and a nasty drop.

The 8 mile climb kept going and going, left, right, and up….

There were great views, and finally, some weather (in the distance….).

But it wasn’t a free ride.  This is work.
All riders I’m sure were in their easiest gear for 8 miles and anywhere from 90 to 180 minutes - feeling the burn on every pedal stroke.
Dr. Dave did it!!

So these two crazy kids rode to the top, and exchanged vows.
Nobody saw it except Andy and Michelle because these two are so fast they are way ahead of everyone else!!

The CCC Riders enjoyed their accomplishments and the views!

You kids know I am cool, right?
But did you know I had snow balls!
I figured I give you a peak of them here at Monarch Pass – 11,312 feet above sea level and where the watersheds for the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean meet!!
Impressive huh?  I’m talkin’ about the Continental Divide!!

The view down and eastward was welcomed and inspiring, and we pointed our bikes down hill, towards the Atlantic Ocean!!

Couldn’t get too many pictures descending, but, there were grand views everywhere!

Well, we are in The Rockies don’t forget…

A look back up.
Nah, I’ll just head into Salida………….
