Day 4: 06 June 2007
Auburn, CA to Truckee, CA. 74 Miles.
Day’s Theme:
The “toughest climb day” of the CCC.
Weather/Terrain:
Weather – unbelievable. It was quite cold when we started, and, many of us ended up at a Burger King for 2 hours due to a SNOW STORM!! It never got warm. Basically, we climbed 8500 feet over the first 62 miles today – I am not kidding! We were on a couple very scenic roads fro most of the day – rugged sierra landscape.
How I feel:
Still quite good. I am not exactly riding very fast – but, I feel like I am doing well and not hurting myself. My back is OK – a little Advil and all is well. Butt is fine – sorry kids, it’s critical!
Notable Events:
Nothing too significant to report.

What’s Happening:

When we left Auburn in the AM is was cold and foggy as seen near this little lake.

Oh deer! HA!

This is Norton Grade Road. We huffed and puffed along this for a while – beautiful road.

We crossed these tracks twice. The other view was even better, but, I didn’t snap it. These are tracks just cut out of the woods – can you imagine the steam train chugging down the tracks?

We weren’t even half way through the ride and lost two hours waiting for this storm to pass. It was really coming down. I had to buy a tee-shirt here because I was freezing!
One rider was riding through this storm and dumped. He and his bike are fine, but, his day ended a little early.

The storm mostly ended so we continued. We caught this Donner Pass Road for a few miles. Steep, and uphill.

Descending from Donner Pass, this is a view of what we just climbed.

Lots of clothes today – even a little do-rag.
Like the blue booties? And my Leggings?
My sister bought me the yellow jacket form the trip and I didn’t put it on just to take the picture – it was a very cold day.

Finally in Truckee.
Found a brewery 300 feet from our hotel – not good. Went over there with Mike “The Rocket” from Austin, YX, Brian from Manchester, England, and Erin from Hawaii. Brian was a handful once I pumped a beer into him. He crushed me………………
