Day 33 – Riding Along Broadway Near Quincy, IL

Day’s Theme:
Sail east, with a tailwind!

Weather/Terrain:
This day couldn’t have been much better – continued rolling, quiet roads through MO, then nice, flat, and fast roads on the other side of the Mississippi River!  Even the humidity seemed to lessen as this day went on.  And, if all that wasn’t enough, we even got a tail wind once we crossed the Mississippi!!  Thank you God!!

How I feel:
Couldn’t be better today.  Ironically, I had three beers last night (Boulevard Wheat from KC – nice stuff) and I felt better today than in the last couple days.  US Air Fed Ex the Butt Cream, and I bought a 2,000 pound can of A&D Ointment at Wal-Mart tonight.  This is a dream…………

Notable Events:
Crossing the Mississippi River on the barge – it was fun, and yet another “milestone” for us CCC Riders!

Rider Profile: Mike Chaney, 53, from San Luis Obisbo, CA.

Mike was born in LA, and now lives in San Luis Obisbo with his wife Cory and their two 20 year old children.  Mike owns two surf shops in CA, and recently returned from a surfing vacation in Indonesia.  He also enjoys mountain biking, snowboarding, and golf.  Mike is a big baseball fan and played competitive hardball up until age 50!  Mike is on this ride with his buddy Tom (not profiles yet…) and Tom signed himself and Mike up for this ride after they had drinks with another friend of theirs who rode self-supported across the US last year and told them “it would change their lives”.
Mike’s license plate is “NEVER K” – ie, never strike out, quit!!
He says, and tells his children:
“There is no perfect”.

What’s Happening:

The morning’s ride was nice – continued rolling county roads which brought us by many farms – crops, cows, etc…,.
It was hot and muggy this morning, and MO punished us a bit more before it let us out!

The remaining MO roads were up and down, and some were a bit “rough”.
I’ll tell ya, you’d think after 2000+ miles your ass would be nerve damaged, but, in fact, most have become incredibly sensitive and can detect the slightest bit of road vibration.  And it hurts……

So, today, instead of more pictures of hay rolls, here is a picture of some of the equipment.
Before these are used, a tractor is used to cut the hay.
Then the first tractor is used to pull a machine with circular wheels that simply spin (fast) and pull the hay into a continuous pile.
The second tractor pulls a bailer that scoops up the hay and makes rolls.  Like a yodel without the chocolate.

At about 50 miles in the town of Wiliamstown, MO, the Sag Vehicles stopped and many riders fueled up.
That dilapidated Pepsi machine was working, and for 50 cents you could have a cold Pepsi!  Don’t put a bill in it though……
Michelle from AbB gave many of us 2 quarters, and the cold soda was refreshing.
I’ll tell ya, I have downed more soda on this trip than I have had in the last 3 years!  After all the Gatoraid, it is quite refreshing!  J

Off these county roads, there are these long, stone roads that go somewhere.

At lunch in Canton, MO, just before we crossed the Mississippi, we met Dan Steinbeck, Editor for The Press-News Journal in Canton, MO.
Dan came down to the river, discussed things with Christine from AbB, and saw us off to Illinois…………

10 of us queued up and got on the barge to cross the Mississippi.
Left to right is Andrew, Rocket, Erin Go Bike, Wayne, Herb, Cliff, Bob, Me, and Tim.

This Mississippi River kids.
I love it!

In Illinois now, and time to get back on the saddle.
No rush there……………

Illinois was like heaven – quiet, hard, flat, fast roads with less humidity and a pretty good tail wind!
This is what we’re talking’ about!!
This was fun.
It’s all fun – it’s all good.
