Day’s Theme:
Pedal, pedal, and get east…..
Weather/Terrain:
Like yesterday, another glorious day for bicycle riding, and our “high” mileage days continued. Low 90s, morning humidity fading to a nice, hot, but doable day. Today’s roads ranged from smooth and fast concrete, to loose gravel, and loose tar. The scenery was still largely immense corn fields, with some soy.
How I’m/we’re feeling:
I am well, and most riders are well, but the kids who are sick are still illing. The next two days we have reduced mileage, and then a rest day, so, hopefully everyone can stay/get healthy for the final two legs.
Notable Events:
Stopped along a road and watched a couple farmers set-up and start to sow a field. Huge farm equipment – cool stuff. These guys work hard, and it is hard work. So, don’t waste your food!
Rider Profile: Jane, 55, and Gene, 57, Emborsky from Silver Lake, NY

These two kids are originally from western NY and still live there. They have 2 20-something year old sons.
Jane JUST retired from the USPS, and Gene is a retired teacher who still does some course teaching at the community college. They both ride with the Hollyloft Bicycle Club.
Jane enjoys spending time with her cocker spaniel and doing obedience training.
Gene is a very active cyclist and does some racing.
Both these kids are great cyclists and even better people. I wish they were my neighbors! J
Jane says:
“It is important to make every day count – don’t take them for granted.”
Gene says:
“You don’t stop playing games because you grow old – you grow old because you stop playing games.” And,
“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire”

What’s Happening:

When we left Springfield, we went by Homer Simpson’s place of employment – The Springfield Power Plant.
We ate a donut in his honor – yummy…..

This awesome little cabin was right along Rochester Road.

Around mile 20, the Rocket and I were losing focus and needed a distraction. So, we snapped a picture of this cemetery behind the corn fields….

And then watched these farmers set-up to sow this field.
This large machine is a multi-bin/line sower – why all the fields are so symmetrical I guess.
And symmetry is beauty- right Kenny??

You all know I had 8 of so flats out west, and am on my third rear tire. But others have had more trouble.
Jeff here is on his third back wheel!
Arlene is on her third bike!
Cliff I think is only there for moral support, and to keep Jeff from throwing that bike into the corn field!

Gerard amazes us with his bicycle mechanics, bicycle riding, and occasionally, his circus like high-wire tricks.
He even likes Gomez – I know that impresses one SLF out there……

Just before our first SAG, we traveled along the Lincoln Memorial Parkway, and the Sangamon River.

I mentioned the symmetrical fields – look at that.
It’s really cool looking form road overpasses and must be an awesome view from the air.

We rode through corn and soy fields all day.
This road surface was not so good – lots of loose tar which is now on our shoes, bikes, and tires.

I tell you , these corn stalks are huge.
