Day’s Theme:
Beware of the Dog!

Weather/Terrain:
Today was a perfect day to ride – low 70s, low humidity, good tailwind, and pretty good roads. The “gotcha” was, the scheduled 105 miles became more for everyone – probably 116 for me, and over 120 for others. The route sheet sent most people astray in the AM, and a closed bridge added another 6 or so! I guess it was a good day for that at least….,. The tailwinds helped, but our terrain was a little hillier than we have seen in a bit.

How I’m/we’re feeling:
Other than being paranoid about getting sick, I am well. Robert is still one big flem-ball, and two riders didn’t even ride today with chest congestion.

Notable Events:
Idiots emerging form the corn fields – to play baseball on bicycles………..

Rider Profile: Dave “Dr. Dave” Moore, 48, from Gettysburg, PA.

“Dr. Dave” is a family practitioner who was born and lives in Gettysburg, PA with his wife Carol and 15year old daughter Bekki. Dave has completed many bicycle tours in his years, and rides with the Hanover Cyclers Club. Dave had the dream to ride cross country for many years and is thoroughly enjoying this opportunity. Dave “loves to learn” and enjoys everything, especially movies, books, and history. He has been to 4 movies on this trip! Dave is raising money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation (http://livestrong.org/grassroots/davidmoore) and is keeping his blog at http://davescrosscountrybikeride.blogspot.com/
Dave says:
“We can’t control the mileage, terrain, or weather, but we can choose our attitude and that makes all the difference.”

What’s Happening:

We weren’t even really awake yet, I mean I didn’t even have a bio break yet and we were leaving Indiana entering Ohio at 2.7 miles.
Well, I got myself together anyway for the photo….

Today’s route was all along quiet county roads with farms, corn, and freakin’ angry dogs everywhere.

At SAG I, we noticed this ball field near the cornfield.
Before we knew exactly what was going on, they came out from the corn fields – no, not baseball greats, but idiot bicycle riders who played a quick at bat using a tennis ball and bicycles.
“Field of Nightmares” really……….

Along Loy Road, we meet the two most vicious of the 100 vicious dogs of that day – two really angry sheppards.
Seriously, not sure what happens to dogs in Ohio, but they are NOT happy……..

County roads brought us to Springfield, OH, and Braden’s Panini Shop. Braden’s has been open for one week, but was a good find and will be on future AbB Route Sheets. This place had it all – couches, paninis, ice cream, gourmet fudge and chocolates, and venti mocha triple lattes! J

SAG II was near a church and cemetery, with a simple but perhaps unobtainable dream.

After our re-route, we caught up to Cliff who was with Nick, 10, who lives along Rt. 296.
Cliff’s rear derailleur somehow got caught in his rear wheel and it tore it in pieces, broke a spoke, and even bent his frame – ouch.
Nick, a Cincinnati Reds and Ken Griffey Jr. fan, offered Cliff his bike for $30 and kept us entertained for a few moments.
The Sag Van came, we got Nick some energy bars and Gatorade, and got Cliff back to the hotel.
Cliff and Andy from AbB took a ride at dinner to a shop a few miles away so that hopefully Cliff can roll tomorrow.

This is Cliff’s bike – not pretty, not useable!
It’s not just you legs kids – I have been telling you that. Well, you already know about as much about keeping your ass operational than you care to know. But there are so many other things that can take you off the road – accidents, mechanical failure, illness/infection, dehydration, fatigue, and many more.

Farms and farm houses were with us all day. This one was close to Marysville, our destination for today.

As we walked to Bob Evan’s to Dinner form Super 8 in Marysville, we were surrounded by hotels, but this old barn survived in the middle of modernization.
There were many scenes like this today – farm and farming legacy, and 21 century urbanization.
